Congratulations to Marcia McNeil, on her election as Bencher for the Law Society of British Columbia County of Victoria. The role of a bencher is crucial as it involves making decisions that shape the legal profession and uphold its standards. As Marcia noted in her candidate’s statement, the Law Society is entering a period of transition. With the Province’s intent to broaden the Law Society’s scope to include oversight of paralegals and other para-legal professionals, it is critical that the bar maintain its independence in regulating the competence and integrity of legal service providers in BC. That includes dealing with issues related to the composition and operations of an amalgamated professional oversight body for BC’s legal professionals.
As a respected lawyer with 35 years of practice experience, including working with numerous provincial tribunals, agencies, boards and independent review processes, Marcia’s career has been dedicated to upholding the principles of procedural fairness and due process that protect the public interest and the administration of justice. She brings that background to her new role as a strong advocate on behalf of lawyers in the County of Victoria, ensuring that our legal institutions continue to protect the bar’s independence to self-regulate and enshrine appropriate due process protections for all its members.
We are confident that the public interest in regulation of lawyers in British Columbia has an able advocate in Marcia. Her participation as a Bencher during this uncertain time will undoubtedly serve the public interest, and we have full trust in her commitment and capabilities.
